Embora não seja tão barato quanto se esperava antes do lançamento, nos Estados Unidos o dispositivo é encontrado por cerca de US$ 100 nos planos atrelados a operadoras. No Brasil, desbloqueado, custa a partir de R$ 2.000.

Conforme já dissemos por aqui, o objetivo da Apple é maximizar os lucros com modelos antigos. É fácil entender: a maçã sempre teve "iPhones mais baratos", que eram as versões anteriores ao lançamento mais recente, que sempre viam um corte de preço assim que um aparelho novo é lançado. Agora isso deixa de existir porque a Apple encerrou a comercialização do iPhone 5 para dar lugar ao iPhone 5c, que, basicamente, é o mesmo aparelho com um acabamento diferente.
Desta forma, ambos os dispositivos se equivalem em especificações e preço final para o usuário. O que não é igual são os custos de produção que a Apple terá. Na média, explica o professor João Carlos Lopes Fernandes, professor de Engenharia de Computação do Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia, a substituição do metal pelo policarbonato, conhecido popularmente como plástico, diminui os custos a taxas entre 15% e 30%.
